The equipment necessary to start the exercises is readily available at home. For example, you can use any box filled with magazines or newspapers, or you can use something like a full laundry detergent box. Just be sure to cover the boxes with a non-slip material.

Only one box is needed to start the program; later you will progress to using several boxes of differing heights. After you have worked through the box exercises on the DVD (which will take several weeks or longer) you will progress to using wobble devices. You can build a wooden wobble board using a ball underneath for movement, or you can purchase inflatable discs.

Pilates for Pooches DVD

Subtitle: A Core Strengthening and Conditioning Program
Author: Sarah Johnson
Format: DVD, NTSC format
Running Time: 1 hour, 4 minutes
Release Date: 2006

Pilates for Pooches will teach your dog to move from his core while actively stretching and strengthening his muscles through the use of various boxes and wobble devices. Sarah Johnson was one of the first to bring human Pilates to Northern California in the early 1990s. Using similar concepts, she has designed a simple, progressive home exercise program—the FitDogs program—for healthy dogs. This program will help you meet your fitness goals, whether your dog is a performance dog or a family pet.

This DVD presents a combination of lecture, outline, and demonstration videos to guide you through the exercise program step by step. It also includes a bonus section on how to get started with a puppy. To further assist you with the program, there are printable PDF files on the disc that summarize information from the video: conditioning guidelines, exercise outlines, and a log for monitoring your dog's progress.
