- Can you use this DVD to retrain a dog that already knows how to weave?
If you have an experienced agility dog and you want to retrain or "brush-up" his skills to make sure he has a solid understanding of entrances and his job in the poles, then Susan recommends that you start from the beginning of the 2x2 program, just like a dog new to the poles.
What are the specifications for the 2x2 poles?
The 2x2 weave pole bases need to have a "tail" on both ends so that they are easy to line up, and they must have holes in the bases so that you can secure them to the ground with stakes.
- Susan Garrett's Shaping Success book states that the spacing of the poles should be 20" on center. Does that apply even if I'm going to be trialing on weaves that are spaced at 22" or 24"?
Susan recommends teaching the dog the correct behavior on tighter spacing because the dogs can easily adjust to a wider space between the poles. If, however, you teach the initial behavior using 2x2 poles that set at a wider spacing, the dogs will have a much more difficult time adjusting (and may even skip poles) when faced with weave poles that have a tighter spacing.
