After much experimentation with applying rubber granules, and a great deal of discussion and work with one of the largest suppliers of rubber granules in the U.S., American Recycling Center, Darlene Woz developed a new and exciting method for applying rubber granules to the surfaces of agility obstacles. Called "wet pour," the rubber granules are mixed with a urethane binder thinned with acetone. This mixture is evenly spread on plastic sheeting within a marked outline for the shape of the obstacle you want to cover. After this obstacle "skin" cures, you peel it off the plastic sheet, adhere it to the obstacle surface, and then do a final trim for perfect edges. The resulting surface conforms to AAC, AKC, ASCA, CKC, CPE, NADAC, UKC, UKI, and USDAA regulations.
Now you can use Darlene's method to make your own agility skins. This kit contains
- Pre-measured amounts of rubber granules for making skins to cover a dogwalk and for making slats
- Container of polyurethane binder
- Full-color instruction manual: Making Rubber Skins for Agility Equipment
The rubber granules for each color and section of the dogwalk are bagged separately in recloseable plastic bags that can be used for mixing the binder and rubber together. To see what other materials you will need, select the Files tab.
Dogwalk dimensions: 36' long; planks are 12' long x 12" wide
Contacts: 36"
Slats: You will make slats from rubber granules and form them onto the skins. You will receive enough rubber to make that slats are 1-1/8" wide and 3/8" high. You can, however, make the slats smaller if you desire.
Added weight to obstacle when skins applied: Approx. 34 lbs.
Rubber colors: You will receive yellow rubber granules for the contact zones unless you specify a different color in the comments box at checkout. For the dogwalk middle plank and ramps, you can select from the colors and color combinations on the left. If you want a color combination other than what's shown, please note that in the box on the right.
About rubber granules: You should be aware that not all rubber granules are created equal. Different suppliers have granules that vary in size, quality, and amount of dust. This kit uses 1-4mm TPV granules (except for the Navy and Lilac colors which are EPDM granules), a virgin rubber material produced from a high-grade polymer. American Recycling's TPV granules are state-of-the-art and known for their color consistency, resiliency, durability and high UV stability, and also for being 98% dust-free because of the high standards they require in their packaging. They are safe for use in playground surfaces and they are commonly used to create impact-absorbing rubberized sports surfaces.
Important Shipping Note: Rubber kits are shipped directly from the manufacturer in Michigan. U.S. orders will be shipped via UPS Ground. Canadian and Overseas orders will be shipped by USPS Priority Mail International. Please allow up to 2 weeks for delivery in the U.S. and 2-4 weeks for international orders.
