The Chillybuddy Cooling Jacket is an engineered dog coat that will keep your dog safe and comfortable in hot weather. The Chillybuddy was developed from an analysis of the physics of the dog as a thermal engine in a radiating environment. The physics of the jacket has been vetted by heat transfer engineers as well as by a professor of biophysics at Johns Hopkins.

The Chillybuddy Cooling Jacket can significantly lower your dog's coat temperature and provides a shield from direct sunlight. On a 90°F day, wearing a Chillybuddy Cooling Jacket can lower your dog's coat temperature from 145°F to 103°F, a reduction of almost 30%. (This was tested with a Fluke laser infrared thermometer.) Soaking the Chillybuddy Cooling Jacket in water to dampen the cotton lining before use can lower your dog's coat temperature by a further 20°, from 103°F to 83°F. Cotton has been repeatedly shown to be the best fiber to hold water for evaporative cooling.

For light-haired dogs, a Chillybuddy Cooling Jacket also protects the underlying skin from sunburn, and it can protect coats of show dogs from bleaching by the sun, which often occurs as summertime reddening or browning, especially at the tips of the coat.

This lightweight jacket's outer layer is made of woven synthetic with an aluminized finish. The twisted strands of the fabric function like thousands of tiny mirrors, reflecting 70% of the incoming infrared radiation away from the surface for the coat and preventing the jacket from absorbing as much heat from the environment. The jacket is lined with a cotton mesh. The cotton mesh liner can be wetted to provide substantial evaporative cooling. Unlike other wet jackets, the evaporation occurs in the shade of the outer layer, creating an unusually cool environment on the hottest days. Both layers allow air to pass freely through.

Want more detail on how it works? Besides providing additional evaporative cooling for the dog, the inner layer also prevents the dog's body heat from reflecting back to the dog (which would happen if the jacket was only made from the aluminized material). The outer reflective layer similarly protects the evaporative layer from absorbing heat from the sun and environment. The combination of physical effects is the basis for the patent claim and what sets the Chillybuddy clearly apart from every other dog cooling product. The jacket works better than other solutions because the evaporative cooling mechanism emphasizes open airflow rather than large amounts of water. Consider that if you are just a little damp and step into airflow from a strong fan, you are quickly cooled. But if you are dripping wet, and if the air is not moving, you won't be cooled effectively. Air is 70% of the evaporative cooling effect; other jackets, in addition to missing the reflective protection, miss this key point.

How the Chillybuddy Coat Fits: The Chillybuddy Coat goes over the dog's head and attaches with a Velcro strap at the base of the neck and a separate Velcro strap underneath the belly. The belly band is made from nylon so that it stretches.

How to Measure Your Dog: Be sure that your dog is standing squarely, with head up, and is looking straight ahead.

  • Neck: Measure the circumference of the dog's neck at its widest point.
  • Back Length: Measure from the base of the dog's neck (the point where the neck joins the body) to the base of his tail (the point where the tail joins the body).
  • Girth: Measure the circumference of the dog's chest, just behind his front legs, at its widest point.

Best Cooling Coat EVER!
I have three canine athletes that do multiple sports and outdoor activities. I currently have two Chillybuddy Canine Cooling Jackets (two boys share since they are similar in size). These cooling jackets are by far the easiest jackets to use. Dry or wet, they will most certainly keep your athlete comfortable after their agility run, flyball run, bikejoring tour, and general hiking during warm weather. I have had other brands of cooling coats before and have either sold or traded them away. I will ONLY use this jacket for my boys. My boys love wearing these jackets, they are light-weight and very flexible to wear while in their kennels waiting for their next run. I HIGHLY recommend these jackets for your athletes.

Strange sizing for active dogs
I bought this coat for my border collie. Based on the size guide, he was closest to a medium. But, when I received it, the jacket was slightly short in the back and had a HUGE belly band - by several inches beyond the velcro closure. Even if I made adjustments myself, the rear sides of the jacket stick out awkwardly, making it an overall poor fit for my dog, especially considering the cost. Since I'm afraid that sizing up will just make it huge all-around, this is going back for a refund. Disappointed as I was so looking forward to having this for when we run Fast CAT.

This one actually work!
I have tried multiple coats to protect my black, thick coated dogs from solar related heat. This works the best of them all. I particularly like that it works well even without adding water and that it creates evaporative cooling (like a swamp cooler) for even more intense cooling if you dunk it in water or douse it in the go. I will agree that the mesh can get snags if the dogs are playing hard with other dogs. But the coat still works well even with a few pulled loops. And the functionality is what is important to me. Anytime the dogs wear the coats we get oodles of compliments and questions. Have recommended hundreds of times and will continue to do so.

Love it, but needed significant alterations
I bought a Chillybuddy for one of my dogs about ten years ago and it's always been my favorite cooling coat. The design is fantastic and it does a great job doing what it's supposed to do. I bought a small for my 15.5"/20lb sheltie based on his back length of 19". The size of the coat is perfect, but the belly band that came with it was astronomically long. I had to triple-fold the excess fabric over itself and sew it all together to shorten the belly band by over half its length. Now it's perfect. Given that this website markets largely to sporting dogs, you'd think they'd realize they aren't obese. I wish there was a way to make the belly band adjustable or easier to size.
Comment from Clean Run Thank you for sharing your fitting experience. Unfortunately, we don't manufacture the product so we don't control the design. The company sells to dogs of all types. But, if we can get enough feedback about adjustments in the design being needed, they will sometimes change things. The other company we were work with for cooling coats sells us extra belly bands so that we can give the customer a smaller or larger one than normally comes with the coat. So we will pass the information on.
