Called the long jump in USDAA and the broad jump in AKC agility, this obstacle is often neglected in training. The result is that most of us aren't comfortable performing the handling maneuvers at the long jump—front crosses, rear crosses, threadles, serpentines, recalls, and so on—that we readily use elsewhere on course. Instead, when we see a long jump in competition with an approach that isn't straightforward, we have to figure out a plan to manage our dog so we can get him over the obstacle without slicing through sideways or knocking a plank.

With Mary Ellen Barry's clever and simple training program, you'll teach your dog there is a correct entry and exit for the long jump. With this understanding, you will be able to cue turns and extension lines, and your dog can be responsible for straightening his approach when necessary and for completing the entire obstacle even if there's a turn afterward.

If you're willing to put just a little bit of training time in, you won't have to let this obstacle dictate your choice of handling ever again. As you'll see in the DVD, dogs pick up the work quite quickly, and in just a few training sessions your dog can have a brilliant long jump performance. This DVD shows dogs of varying ages and levels of experience being shown how to do the training.
