On the Hawaiian islands of Lanai, Molokai, and Maui, white-spotted axis deer live a stress-free life in paradise where a tropical climate and fertile soil provide abundant food. The axis deer are not native to the islands, but were a gift from Hong Kong to King Kamehameha V in the 1860s. So the Hawaiian axis deer live without natural predators, disease, or competition for resources. The population of axis deer is growing 20-30% per year and they have become an invasive species. Without proper management, deer populations pose a serious threat to the islands' critical watersheds, agriculture, human health, and unique biodiversity. So the islands have started a program for mindful harvesting of axis deer as a means to control the population. Their meat is harvested for restaurants on the islands as well as on the USA mainland.
So why not also use the meat to make a high-quality dog treat! Free to run unrestricted, the Hawaiian Axis deer meat is lean and high in energy (high glucose/lactic acid content). Go Go has added USA-sourced blueberries, non-GMO chia and flax seeds, and fresh sweet potatoes to provide fiber, healthy fatty acids, and micronutrients. The treats are 1" square but break up very easily into smaller treats.
