Without a doubt, the most common cause of hind limb lameness in dogs worldwide is injury to the cranial cruciate ligament. In dogs, we call it the CCL, in humans it’s the ACL. Unfortunately, once a CCL injury occurs in one stifle (knee), the chance of injury/tearing of the CCL in the opposite stifle is greater than 50%.

If the injury is caught early, before a complete tear occurs, there are conservative holistic options including rehabilitation therapy and even regenerative medicine treatments (platelet rich plasma, stem cell therapy, etc.). If the tear is more advanced, however, surgical treatment is usually recommended.
