Independent Stopped Dogwalks - 10-Week Course, Standard Registration

Independent Stopped Dogwalks - 10-Week Course, Standard Registration

NOT eligible for discounts or promotions

We have started class, but you can join the class while it's in progress and still get to see the earlier lessons.

First Day of Class: June 3, 2019
Class Length: 10 weeks

When training a stopped dogwalk, Tammy strives for an independent end-behavior, forward drive over the obstacle, lateral handling distance, sendaways, and strong verbal release cues. If you have to manage your dog’s performance on the contact, you are not free to handle the course in the manner you wish. An independent dogwalk behavior gives you control of your movements on course and allows the dog to feel confident and in control of his choices, which in turn creates faster, more fluid performances.

By dissecting the dogwalk performance into small pieces, Tammy has been able to develop a method that makes sense not only to her students but also to their dogs! There are no props or targets used in her methods to teach the stopped end-behavior except for the board itself—so no luring, physical manipulation, or fading is used.

The program includes homework that you can do at home away from the equipment, and help teams not only feel successful but also feel like they are making progress.

Note: Although the class focuses on the dogwalk, the behaviors and exercises transfer to the A-frame if you also want to do a stopped A-frame. The teeter has different criteria so this class will not help with teeter training.

What is included with your Standard registration?

  • 10 weeks of written lectures and video instruction
  • Access to all course materials on both mobile devices and your computer
  • Ability to participate in discussions and watch all posted videos—you may ask specific questions about course content, but not questions about your own dog
  • No expiring content—you can go back any time to read and watch lessons. There is no time limit.

NOTE: If you would like to be able to submit videos of your dog working on the homework as well as ask specific questions about your dog and his progress, you should sign up for the Premier registration.

  • Dog's age: Although you can start the rear-foot targeting in this program with a 9-month-old dog, the dog should be at least 1-year-old before starting the dogwalk training in week 7 of the course. If this is not the case with your dog, we recommend the Standard class registration.
  • Clicker or verbal marker understanding
  • A wait or stay, a cone wrap behavior, and tunnel understanding are useful skills, but not mandatory.

Equipment needed

  • Treats and toys
  • Travel plank/contact board: You need a training plank that is 12" wide and 3' to 6' in length. It should have a nonslip finish and lie flat on the ground, with no lift or angle.
  • Tunnel: Access to a tunnel (even a play tunnel will work) is needed for the lesson on discrimination work.
  • Jumps or cones: Access to jumps or cones is required when working on sending, entries, and exits.
  • Dogwalk: Access to a regulation dogwalk is required once advanced training begins.

Tammy has been training dogs for more than 30 years, getting her start in 4-H obedience in middle school. Tammy found her love for agility in 1999 and started teaching agility in 2002. She opened her own training program in 2006 when she founded Oregon School for Clever Dogs. Tammy is best known for helping her students create happy working relationships with their dogs. All of Tammy's own dogs enjoy working with her and it is obvious through the joy and engagement they show on course.

Tammy likes to focus on trust and clear communication between dog and handler. As an instructor, she puts heavy emphasis on the understanding of partnership on and off the course using reward based training and play.

Tammy’s background as a Veterinary Technician and a Small Animal Massage Practitioner allows her to see when problems on course may be due to physical limitations and not necessarily training issues.
