Do isolated self-control exercises really work in the real world of busy and chaotic dog events?

Tracy defines self-control from a dog sports perspective and explains what self-control really requires from our dogs; there is a lot more happening for our dogs then just choosing the behavior we want them to choose. Processing is complex and requires a lot of bandwidth in the dog's brain. It is also highly individual!

To progress our training skills, it is critical that we learn how our dogs process information so we understand what drives their learning and choices. This knowledge dramatically changes our training approach. Rather than working on traditional self-control games separately, we stealthily "fold in" self-control as part of training games/strategy at each stage of training a behavior. The end result is that we get the behavior AND the self-control with less failure and frustration for the dog. We don't wait until the behavior is trained to introduce elements of self-control.
