Not sure how to train directional cues? The Merit Jähne self study course will show you two ways (one using barrels and the other using food bowls) to teach directional cues on the flat away from the agility equipment and how to transfer the skills to the obstacles.

Directional cues allow you to tell your dog when you want them to turn or go straight independently of your position on the agility course. In this course, you will work on building "hard turns" and "soft turns" as well as teaching the dog to go straight. A hard turn is a very tight left or right turn after an obstacle whereas a soft turn tells your dog to turn slightly toward you or slightly away from you after an obstacle.

These directional cues are vital for running contacts and distance handling, but they are also invaluable other places on course: at the tunnel, weave poles, and jumps.

Train at your own pace when you want and where you want! Since the lessons build on each other, you can work through them in a relaxed manner, one after the other.

You can start this self-study course whenever you like. It includes 18 lessons that you can complete at your own pace. There are no fixed deadlines or due dates.

What is included with your purchase?

  • Access to all course materials on both mobile devices and your computer
  • Downloadable content for off-line access when you're out training
  • No expiring content—you can go back any time to read and watch lessons. There is no time limit.

Prerequisites

The method using food bowls is perfect to train with puppies and young dogs. The method with the barrels is suitable for all dogs that are at least 12 months old. Younger dogs shouldn't have to do hard turns very often because it is stressful on their body.

Equipment & space needed

  • A cardboard or plastic box about 24" x 16" or bigger
  • A non-slip mat that fits in the box
  • Food and toys
  • 5 food bowls (for bowl method)
  • Optional: A remote treat dispenser such as the & Train
  • 8-10 cones or 4 cones and 2 jump wings
  • 4 pop-up barrels (or big cones for barrel method)
  • Short tunnel
  • 3 jumps

Most of the work can be done indoors, but a 32' x 32' area will allow you to do everything. More space is even better!
