The Chillybuddy Cooling Jacket is an engineered dog coat that will keep your dog safe and comfortable in hot weather. The Chillybuddy was developed from an analysis of the physics of the dog as a thermal engine in a radiating environment. The physics of the jacket has been vetted by heat transfer engineers as well as by a professor of biophysics at Johns Hopkins.
The Chillybuddy Cooling Jacket can significantly lower your dog's coat temperature and provides a shield from direct sunlight. On a 90°F day, wearing a Chillybuddy Cooling Jacket can lower your dog's coat temperature from 145°F to 103°F, a reduction of almost 30%. (This was tested with a Fluke laser infrared thermometer.) Soaking the Chillybuddy Cooling Jacket in water to dampen the cotton lining before use can lower your dog's coat temperature by a further 20°, from 103°F to 83°F. Cotton has been repeatedly shown to be the best fiber to hold water for evaporative cooling.
For light-haired dogs, a Chillybuddy Cooling Jacket also protects the underlying skin from sunburn, and it can protect coats of show dogs from bleaching by the sun, which often occurs as summertime reddening or browning, especially at the tips of the coat.
This lightweight jacket's outer layer is made of woven synthetic with an aluminized finish. The twisted strands of the fabric function like thousands of tiny mirrors, reflecting 70% of the incoming infrared radiation away from the surface for the coat and preventing the jacket from absorbing as much heat from the environment. The jacket is lined with a cotton mesh. The cotton mesh liner can be wetted to provide substantial evaporative cooling. Unlike other wet jackets, the evaporation occurs in the shade of the outer layer, creating an unusually cool environment on the hottest days. Both layers allow air to pass freely through.
Want more detail on how it works? Besides providing additional evaporative cooling for the dog, the inner layer also prevents the dog's body heat from reflecting back to the dog (which would happen if the jacket was only made from the aluminized material). The outer reflective layer similarly protects the evaporative layer from absorbing heat from the sun and environment. The combination of physical effects is the basis for the patent claim and what sets the Chillybuddy clearly apart from every other dog cooling product. The jacket works better than other solutions because the evaporative cooling mechanism emphasizes open airflow rather than large amounts of water. Consider that if you are just a little damp and step into airflow from a strong fan, you are quickly cooled. But if you are dripping wet, and if the air is not moving, you won't be cooled effectively. Air is 70% of the evaporative cooling effect; other jackets, in addition to missing the reflective protection, miss this key point.

How the Chillybuddy Coat Fits: The Chillybuddy Coat goes over the dog's head and attaches with a Velcro strap at the base of the neck and a separate Velcro strap underneath the belly. The belly band is made from nylon so that it stretches.
How to Measure Your Dog: Be sure that your dog is standing squarely, with head up, and is looking straight ahead.
- Neck: Measure the circumference of the dog's neck at its widest point.
- Back Length: Measure from the base of the dog's neck (the point where the neck joins the body) to the base of his tail (the point where the tail joins the body).
- Girth: Measure the circumference of the dog's chest, just behind his front legs, at its widest point.
