Learn specific exercises that will help your dog jump with less effort, but more power and fluid motion. This class will improve your dog's muscle engagement, strength, and overall understanding of how to use his whole body—not just power from the rear—to efficiently take a jump. You will work on increasing your dog’s strength and efficiency for performing each part of the jumping movement by addressing each of the following skills:

  • Limb awareness
  • Flexibility
  • Shifting weight to the rear
  • Lifting up the front of the body to take the jump and go straight
  • Lifting up the front of the body to take a jump and prepare for a turn
  • Power to push off from the rear, both when going straight and while turning
  • Rounding over the jump
  • Landing a jump straight
  • Landing a jump while turning

These exercises are suitable for dogs 10 months and older. The exercises focus on building the strength required for each stage of jumping; there is no actual jumping in the course.

You can start this self-study course whenever you like. It includes eight lessons that you can complete at your own pace. There are no fixed deadlines or due dates.

What is included with your purchase?

  • Access to all course materials on both mobile devices and your computer
  • Downloadable content for off-line access when you're out training
  • No expiring content—you can go back any time to read and watch lessons. There is no time limit.

Prerequisites

Dog should be at least 10 months old.

Before you start the exercises, brush up on your targeting skills; specifically: 1) Nose touch where your dog's front feet leave the ground, and rear feet stay on the ground; 2) Rear foot targeting on verbal cue, generalized to many different things; 3) Front foot targeting on verbal cue. The following skills are also prerequisites for the class:

  • Give a paw or wave
  • Value for front, rear, and all feet on equipment
  • Folding down
  • Rock-back sit
  • Tuck sit
  • Right and left circles (Spin & Twist)

Equipment and space needed

Substitutions are recommended if you don’t have the equipment used in the videos. There are many possible equipment options and you may use something you have lying around your house.

  • Rocker board or nonslip board – doesn’t have to rock
  • 2-on/2-off board, travel plank, or aerobic bench
  • K9FITbones, large and small balance discs
  • Peanut
  • KLIMBS or platforms
  • Cavalettis, agility jumps, or poles on soda cans

A training space that is 6-8 feet will work, but 6 feet by 12 feet is better.
