This course is very beneficial for dogs competing in any dog sport because it focuses on tricks that involve strength building, body awareness, balance, coordination, and thinking skills.

Tricks are a great way to build a bond with our dogs, and work on our timing when training new behaviors. We can also learn a lot about our dogs by teaching them tricks. We can learn how they think and how they learn new behaviors. This comes in handy when we need to teach any new behavior for sport, such as weaves or contacts in agility. If you're training tricks with a puppy, they will learn how to learn, and they will learn faster with each new trick. See the Outline for a list of the many tricks covered.

You can start this self-study lesson whenever you like. It includes 8 lessons that you can compete at your own pace. There are no fixed deadlines or due dates.

None.

Equipment and space needed

  • Most of the tricks can be done with items you can find around the house.  A few tricks are more specialized and require things that everyone might not have, like a second dog (Hug Your Friend), stairs (Backing Up the Stairs), or a skateboard (Skateboarding). But otherwise, the tricks require basic items like treats, a clicker (optional), objects for targeting (lids, plates, random around-the-house items), a dog bed or rolled-up towel, varied sizes of bowls or boxes and other containers, a pole, a bottle,  a low object for dog to back up on, a piece of Plexiglass or smooth glass (a shelf from your fridge would work!), sticky notes, spoons,  a stool or coffee table, and a hand towel.
  • Most training can be done in the living room or a similar space
