Disc Dogging is taking the world by storm, rapidly spreading across the United States, Canada, and Europe! The Disc Dog Foundations course is an exciting opportunity for every dog to learn the fundamentals of this fun sport—regardless of size, age, athleticism, breed, or mix.
Whether you're a beginner eager to dive into Disc Dog or an intermediate enthusiast aiming to refine your foundation skills, this course has got you covered. No prior disc experience? No problem! You'll learn essential skills alongside your canine teammate that will set you up for success and fun in the thrilling sport of Disc Dogging—whether you're eyeing competitions or just want some backyard fun.
Disc Dog is all about teamwork! Some weeks you will focus on honing your own skills; other weeks will be dedicated to helping your dog's skills shine. But every training exercise is designed to help build a strong bond and connection between you and your canine partner.
This course provides the foundational skills you need to play many Disc Dog games. Skills covered include:
- Teaching the human member of the team how to throw a catchable disc, including how to throw "rollers" where the disc spends most of its time on the ground rather than in the air. Rollers can be a strategic throw used in many disc dog games and they are also a great way to play the game of disc dogging with a puppy, older dog, or a dog with mobility issues.
- Learning how to communicate with your dogs about where they should be on the field and where the disc will be, which will help your dog not only play safely but also make more catches. It is essential in the game of disc that the human connects with the dog prior to making a throw. You will learn flatwork "moves" that support you in moving your dog strategically to line them up for a safe and likely catch of the disc.
- Using bitework exercises and games to teach the dog to drop the disc on cue, build drive for the disc, and also build drive to bring the disc back to you for a game of tug.
- Building incentive for the retrieve.
- Teaching your dog to drop a disc at a distance from you and more!
Finally, you'll learn about some of the games played on the competition field. Disc Dog organizations, such as UpDog Challenge, provide games accessible to players at all ability levels and experiences. UpDog offers games that focus on different human and dog skills including tricks, accuracy, speed, and long distance throwing. This allows teams the opportunity to play games aligned with their specific interests and skills. Teams playing UpDog may even choose to earn UpDog and/or AKC titles as they play the game.

Prerequisites
This course is designed for beginner and intermediate disc dogging teams. The tasks you and your dog will practice during this course are safe for puppies and older dogs alike. If your teammate is under the age of 16 months or an older dog with limited mobility, you can alter the tasks to make them more appropriate for your pup. For example, you may "throw a roller" instead of doing an in-air throw.
