SPRING SPECIAL! Regularly $85 for Premier and $65 for Standard; now $70 and $45

If you train agility skills frequently at home, you will find that you make much faster progress toward your agility goals than if you only train once a week at class.

  • Don't have a lot of space?
  • Don't know what to train?
  • Don't have the motivation or support you need to get to work?

"Backyard Training Matters" with Brenna Fender can help! This weekly training group is a unique opportunity to improve your skills in a supportive, friendly environment—all while training in your backyard!

Each lesson takes a variety of challenges from upper-level agility courses and replicates some of these challenges in an approximately 40' x 45' space. Your host, Brenna Fender, reviews, analyzes, and demonstrates some of the challenges and then offers you suggestions and support while you work on the "mini courses" using your own handling style and focusing on your own goals. Mini courses will be broken down for those who need to or want to work in small sections. Options are available for those working on Novice courses as well as those at Masters level.

Everyone can post videos for accountability or for advice (Standard students can also submit limited video!). This training group will not provide specific handling instruction, but it will offer suggestions, coaching, support, and lots of ideas of things to try that fit in a backyard space with limited equipment.

If you don't have a 40' x 45' training area, you are still welcome. We will work together to find ways you can train the basics of the challenges in your available space. We can work around some missing equipment too!

Special features:

  • Detailed video analysis
  • Modifications for space and equipment limitations
  • Accountability options for those who need some help staying on track
  • A friendly, supportive online environment, including threads for complimenting fellow group members
  • Weekly discussions topics (student- and instructor-led)

This training group has both Premier and Standard options. Premier students can submit up to 4 minutes of video each week. They will get their own personal thread in which they can submit their videos and communicate with the instructor. Standard students can submit one 30-second video per week in the weekly uploads thread.

What is included with your registration?

  • Every Wednesday, you will receive at least 8 nested mini courses (that's 8 different courses without having to move your equipment around!). These approximately 10-obstacle courses will replicate challenges found on upper-level courses in different agility organizations. You will also receive a demo video illustrating the challenges on some of the mini courses. You'll see mistakes and adjustments as well as the way the course is modified at times based on the dog's skills or other challenges or limitations.
  • Access to all course materials on both mobile devices and your computer.
  • Downloadable content for off-line access when you're out training.
  • Ability to ask questions, participate in discussions, and watch all posted videos
  • Keep what you buy—No expiring content; after the course ends, you won't be able to ask questions, but the content is still available to you.

What additional items are included with a Premier registration?

  • Premier students can submit up to 4 minutes of video each week and get their own personal thread in which they can submit their videos and communicate with the instructor.

Prerequisites

This course is aimed toward novice, intermediate, and early advanced-level dogs and their handlers. Dogs should be able to safely perform low jumps (or a jump alternative like a hoop or running through jump uprights) and any other obstacles that the handler wants to use in the exercises. Handlers with dogs whose growth plates have not yet closed should consult a health professional to determine whether the dog is ready to jump and weave.

Equipment & space needed

  • A minimum of 6 jumps or jump substitutes (like hoops) are needed to run approximately 50% of the mini courses as designed. A tunnel, 6 weave poles, and a table (or substitutions for these) will be used in some of the courses but they are not required. Even 4 jumps and a tunnel will keep you busy in this course. We can work around equipment limitations and substitutions; just contact Brenna after you enroll for the course. Short tunnels are encouraged for small spaces.
  • Mini courses are set on a 40' x 60' course. Depending on the size and shape of your space and the size and running style of your dog, most of the exercises can be adapted or shortened to fit a smaller space.

"I loved this course. I didn't post anything, but I did set up and play with some of the mini courses. I plan to work on the rest during the summer. It was great to have exercises tailored to limited space and equipment. Besides having some useful things to practice, I appreciated Brenna's videos the most. It was instructive to see how she worked through problems with her dogs, and how she worked with the puppy. I learned more from this than I would have from seeing perfectly polished runs. The guest trainers were great too. Thank you, Brenna!"  —J.G.

"I am looking forward to some private lessons and the next course. I wish I would have started the video posting earlier. Brenna your reviews were extremely worthwhile!"  —P.W.

"Really loved "Backyard Training Matters." There are lots of options, so it's suitable for every level. The sequences can fit in a standard sized backyard, and don't require a ton of equipment. Brenna's demonstrations not only show what it looks like when things go right, but what can go wrong, why it can go wrong, and how to fix it. Her feedback is spot on. I like that she not only points out what could be improved, but also points out what went well and why. Can't wait for the spring session!"  —B.S.

"Brenna Fender's Backyard Training Matters was just what we needed. The course encouraged us to practice regularly and the feedback was very helpful. I have a busy schedule and little experience or equipment, but the class was very flexible and uncomplicated. I hope there is another installment in the spring. Thank you."  —C.K.

"Thanks for all your great feedback; so nice to have an extra watching and let me know the wheres, whats, and whys. It means so much. It’s nice to have it and play back the videos to see what your eye sees. Makes a lot of sense!"  —D.B.

"I truly appreciate any and all feedback and suggestions! I have saved your feedback so I can go back and set up the courses again, read your suggestions, and run it again incorporating your suggestions."  —C.N.

"I really enjoyed the Backyard Training Matters course. I like that I can pick and choose the courses that will best address my dog's training needs and that there is no pressure to do them all. Brenna gives very thoughtful and detailed feedback on each video, and is so positive in noticing the things you did right and not just the areas of improvement. She clearly puts a lot of time and energy into reviewing each video and giving insightful advice and suggestions. I have come out of each session with a list of things that my dog and I can continue to work on in the upcoming months. The course is very reasonably priced and is terrific value for money. I would definitely sign up for another session."  —J.D.

"I took this course with my young Whippet who is currently in Open and Novice AKC and running Level 3 in CPE. He lacks focus and short courses are great for building his focus and confidence.  Each week we had a basic course and several other course options without changing the set-up which was helpful. Brenna kindly presented us with videos from running the courses with her seasoned BC and with her young Whippet. Videos, if submitted, were reviewed and good suggestions made for improvement. Brenna was very encouraging and the course was excellent."  —E.R.

"With Brenna's courses, you can set them up using jumps, a tunnel, maybe weaves and maybe a table, all in a smaller area. She also suggests ways to substitute obstacles the student may not have. Brenna's feedback is timely, constructive and positive. She can see little nuances the student may not even realize they are doing. She suggests options to try the next run and all is very helpful. These Backyard Training programs are fantastic to motivate me to get out and train! It's all right there, just set it up and go have fun! I can video and get excellent feedback on how the run went. I really find these programs valuable and I hope there will be more."  —C.N.

"The multiple course options offered choices for everyone and if they were too easy, we still had many courses to complete or even combine. There were hidden learning opportunities in so many of the mini-courses!! [Brenna's] feedback was so valuable for pointing out improvements and successes and creativity."  —D.J.F.

"The courses were fun and challenging, but not out of reach for us. I like all the options."  —C.

"I liked this format. It worked well, fit my small spaces and the variety of exercises was great."  —T.S.

"Love all the options. Great for teams of any level. Great feedback, too!"  —B.S.

"I love all the options. Let's us keep fresh, change it up, and play with different things. So fun!"  —B.L.

"I thought the course designs were good. [Brenna] always has a lot of different configurations to choose from, and we can easily substitute one obstacle for another."  —K.G.
