Join the Brain Camp Crew (Dr. Kathy Murphy, veterinarian, neuroscientist, and dog sports enthusiast; Tracy Sklenar, international agility coach and competitor; Bobbie Bhambree, Certified Dog Behavior Consultant and long-time agility competitor; Elliot Connor, certified Scent Specific Mantrailing and scent detection instructor, and scentwork competitor and judge) as they explore the intersection of sports, behavior, and neuroscience in 4 amazing online sessions! Their focus will be on setting up successful training and trialing for you and your dog!
Session 1—Teenage Brains: Adolescent Sport Dogs!
Adolescent dogs are developmentally different from adult dogs in both the brain and the body. For this reason, our training plans must be adapted to this sensitive period of a dog's life. This session covers what is happening as the adolescent dog brain develops to help you understand why they do what they do, how to develop and implement training plans with adolescent dogs, setting your adolescent dog up for success while "protecting" their emotional state during this time, resilience games for adolescence, how to introduce them to the training and competition environments, timelines for training, structuring reinforcement, goal setting, learning and memory in adolescent dogs, and problem-solving.
Session 2—Arousal, Resilience, Engagement
Is your dog under-aroused, over-aroused, disengaged, or struggling in the training or competition environment? Many of the performance issues that occur in the ring are a result of the dog's internal state:
- What is happening in their brain and their bodies
- How they process information
- How they are feeling moment by moment
We can actually work a dog's internal state into a training program to help you achieve your training goals! Join us to learn how to get your dogs into the optimal arousal state for training and competition, how to improve your dog’s engagement in different environments, and how to incorporate resilience conditioning into your training program.
Session 3—Perfect At Home… Trouble At Trials!
Having trouble getting your dog's training skills transferred to the trial environments? Ask the experts! We are here to help you sort out your problems in agility, scent sports, flyball, and more! This session will feature insight into WHY it is happening and what you need to do to help the dog be successful.
Session 4—Instructor Insight: Setting Your Students Up For Success
This webinar is designed to help instructors learn how to help their students overcome struggles with their dogs by using effective, science-based techniques for humans and dogs! The Brain Camp crew will discuss common issues, problem-solving techniques, how to set your canine and human students up for success, processing feedback from the dog, and more! You will be able to submit questions in advance (and video clips too, with student permission) as well as ask questions and participate in discussion during the webinar.
Note: Each section of Brain Camp is worth 7 CPDT CEUs for a total of 28 CEUs.
