Muscle loss (muscle atrophy) in our dogs can occur for a variety of different reasons.
Because of the fast-paced nature of the sport we participate in, injuries are not uncommon. Sometimes it's a mild injury that requires a short rest and sometimes surgery is required. More than just missing out on training and competing, being sidelined by an injury can cause muscle loss. A dog that is limping is not using his limb so the muscles are not being used for normal movement, resulting in atrophy. If extended rest or limited activity is required to heal, muscle atrophy will occur over time.
As our retired agility dogs age, they experience a form of age-related muscle loss known as sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is the leading cause of frailty, which can result in a reduced life span in dogs (Hua, Julie, et al. "Assessment of frailty in aged dogs." American journal of veterinary research 77.12 (2016): 1357-1365). Quadriceps muscle loss puts dogs at an increased risk for developing canine osteoarthritis due to the increased strain that is placed on the joints, leading to cartilage degradation.

Prior to joining MYOS, Dr. Padliya was a Sr. Applications Scientist at SCIEX/Danaher where he worked closely with Scientists in the Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical and CRO sectors to solve challenging problems related to protein characterization and systems biology. At Celgene/Bristol-Myers Squibb, Dr. Padliya established a state-of-the art Proteomics Laboratory to conduct basic research on Placental Stem Cells and Natural Killer Cells. Dr. Padliya graduated with a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the State University of New York at Buffalo and has co-authored 7 peer-reviewed publications and is a co-inventor on 8 U.S. and European Patents. He completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Beltsville, Maryland.
