Class has started, but it's not too late to join in! You will be able to see all of the lessons regardless of when you enroll.

  • Would you like to increase your distance skills?
  • Are you having a hard time succeeding in classes with handling lines (Chances, FAST, Jackpot, Gamblers)?
  • Do you want to clarify your cues to create a faster, more confident dog that drives forward?

If you answered "yes" to one or more of these questions, it's time to join The Monthly Distance Challenge with Lisa Schmit!

Lisa has developed a comprehensive and effective training program to teach distance to dog and handler teams. Being able to work away from our dog opens many handling options for any agility class or venue. Plus, every agility venue has a class that requires distance skills. And, let’s face it—none of us are getting any younger! Having distance skills will help us to continue to run our dog as we age or if we get hurt. Distance skills also build confidence in dogs as they learn to drive ahead of you to obstacles. So distance is important and useful for many reasons!

This is a 12-month course. Each month, you will work on a new set of exercises designed to teach and refine various skills while incorporating more distance into the exercises. Lisa will push you to be more clear, crisp, consistent, and calm in your handling. She will focus on when, where, and how to cue your dog properly using body language, verbal cues, and motion. Emphasis will be on understanding the importance of drawing the dog’s path to direct your dog through sequences/courses while pushing for distance.

Lisa provides videos of her training different dogs on each month's sequences—beginner dog learning the sequences as well as advanced dogs pushing for more distance. She uses a variety of video techniques to teach, including voiceovers, slow motion, and photos of sequences. She will show you what she did correctly in her handling, what she did wrong, and how to troubleshoot when things don't go as planned. She will also discuss how, what, and when to cue your dog.

Lisa "screencasts" the videos you submit for review so that she can talk while your video is running, draw lines on the video, and use slow motion to explain what she is saying.

Class Goals

  • Develop clear, consistent communication so that your dog understands your cues.
  • Learn how to use motion to cue your dog at a distance.
  • Learn how to use body language cues to direct your dog at a distance.
  • Learn how to reward your dog to keep them enthusiastic about working away from you.
  • Refine and solidify verbal cues so that your dog has a clear understanding of what you want.
  • Teach you and your dog to work as a team and be comfortable and confident working away from each other.

NOTE: If you join the class after the start date, you will have access to all previously-released material.

What is included with your registration?

  • 12 lessons with written lectures and video instruction—a new lesson is released on the first Wednesday of each month
  • Access to all course materials on both mobile devices and your computer
  • Downloadable content for off-line access when you're out training
  • Ability to ask questions, participate in discussions, and watch all posted videos
  • Keep what you buy—No expiring content; after the course ends, you won't be able to ask questions, but the content is still available to you

What additional items are included with a Premier registration?

  • Ability to submit up to 5 minutes of video each week and work multiple dogs during that time
  • Instructor feedback on video assignments. Feedback will be given to you in video form. Lisa will talk and draw lines on YOUR video and put parts in slow motion to explain what she's saying and provide invaluable coaching feedback. The videos help Lisa review your cues—body language, motion, verbal—and see if they are clear and consistent.

Prerequisites

Dogs must be able to do hoops or jumps and tunnels.

Equipment and space needed

Please note that the space needed for each lesson is the minimum. If you have more room, use it! But if you don't have a lot of room, it's okay; you do not need a huge area to teach and increase your distance skills. You need to be consistent, clear, and calm in your handling and reward a lot! You can work on this in a small area with minimal equipment. If all you have is a 10-foot tunnel, it's fine!

  • Month 1: 2 cones, 2 buckets, 20 x 20 ft.
  • Month 2: 1 tunnel, 3 hoops or jumps, 30 x 50 ft.
  • Month 3: 1 tunnel, 3 hoops or jumps, 30 x 50 ft.
  • Month 4: 1 tunnel, 3 hoops or jumps, 30 x 40 ft.
  • Month 5: 2 tunnels, 3 hoops or jumps, 30 x 50 ft.
  • Month 6: 1 tunnel, 3 hoops or jumps, 30 x 40 ft.
  • Month 7: 1 tunnel, 3 hoops or jumps, 40 x 50 ft.
  • Month 8: 1 tunnel, 7 hoops or jumps, 50 x 50 ft.
  • Month 9: 2 tunnels, 6 hoops or jumps, 50 x 50 ft.
  • Month 10: 1 tunnel, 6 hoops or jumps, 50 x 50 ft.
  • Month 11: 1 tunnel, 5 hoops or jumps, 50 x 60 ft.
  • Month 12: 2 tunnels, 4 hoops or jumps, 50 x 50 ft.

"What do I think about Lisa Schmit and In The Zone Agility…Where to start? There are lots of things I can say about Lisa and her teaching/coaching skills. She offers detailed holistic instructions and a plan for improvement that makes sense from the start to finish, with insights based on her experience with a wide range of dogs. She clearly understands the relationships between handler cues and dog responses (this is a biggie!!!). She has a coach's eye and gives unique and personal responses tailored to each handler/dog. No canned 'one size fits all' approach. Lisa is quick and timely in responses to questions and great video reviews, plus she goes above and beyond the class you're taking to help with other issues as well. I have taken a lot of in-person and online classes over the years from different instructors, and I did not always feel like I got my money's worth; sometimes not even close. But I can honestly say that with any class from Lisa, I have gotten way more than my money's worth. Every single time! Odie is a great agility partner. He would have been a very good dog had I trained him strictly on my own. But the continuous input, training, help, and encouragement that I got from Lisa has resulted in a once in a lifetime DREAM agility partner. We won the 2021 NADAC Silver Stakes Division at Championships. That would not have happened without Lisa Schmit. If you ever wished you had a best friend that would mold you and your dog into the best team you could ever want to be—no matter how small or grandiose your goals—that friend would be Lisa. She loves it. She gets it. She shares it."  —Marcy, TX

"When I attended my first workshop with Lisa, I was a novice handler with my first agility dog. After three days, I felt like a different handler. I had learned so much in such a short time! I have attended workshops every year since. No matter what stage my dogs and I were at, there is always something new to learn! Lisa has a way of breaking down a seemingly complicated skill into manageable pieces with catchy phrases to help you remember. Her online classes are invaluable. The lessons are clearly explained with lots of demonstrations. I would recommend lessons with Lisa to anyone."  —MaryBeth, NY
