Have you ever noticed that your dog performs a behavior differently, or maybe not at all, if you aren't holding a treat or toy? Perhaps they only sit when you show them a snack, or trot the agility course instead of run it if you aren't wearing your bait bag or holding your toy. Or perhaps they don't seem to know what you mean when you ask them to weave without guides or stop on a contact without a target.

If you train with lures or props or carry rewards on your body, you need to learn to "fade" those items out of the picture your dog has of the behavior so that he understands what you want him to do when the lures or props are not present.

In general, dogs aren't good at generalizing. But they are very observant. They are experts on their people. While they are learning to respond to your "sit" cue, they are also paying attention to how you are holding your hands, whether you are standing, sitting, or lying down, and if you are holding a treat in your hand when you give the verbal cue. All of our body language as well as the presence of a lure (food or a toy) can become part of their understanding of what the cue to "sit" is.

Fading is a process that removes lures, props, and even the handler (if needed) from the end behavior. In this webinar, we'll talk about and demonstrate the process of fading and how you can use the concept in different training situations.
