How do you get your dog to work for longer periods? Build laser focus!

How do you motivate your dog to eagerly play, train, or compete with you? Harness your dog's natural drives and build a desire for work.

This course is designed for puppies and young dogs, as well as for handlers who are in the beginning and intermediate phases of agility training. You'll start building the foundation skills that are critical for dog-sport training: focus, enthusiasm for working with you, and impulse control. You will build your bond with your dog and gel as a team as you discover how to apply the science behind how dogs learn, how best to teach them, how to avoid common errors, and how to get your training back on track quickly when there is a problem.

Play with food effectively rather than just being a boring Pez dispenser, explore toy play with dogs that don't like to play, and learn games to play without food or toys.

You can start the Carla Simon self-study course whenever you like. It includes 6 lessons that you can complete at your own pace. There are no fixed deadlines or due dates.

Prerequisites

This course is appropriate for any age of dog, including puppies 5 weeks or older (provided that they enjoy solid food).

Equipment needed

  • High-value food rewards or kibble
  • 2-5 equal value "balls": Doggles are my favorite for litters and most students (they’re plush for attraction, have a squeaker, and a sewn-in handle for attaching a rope), but other options are Chuckit Squeaker Balls, Kongs, or food-stuffable balls (the Lotus Ball is the most popular, but others include the Lily, and the Kong Ballistic Hide 'n Treat). Or you can use what you have on hand, like a rolled-up sock with chicken inside!  You can get a lot of these toys (and other treat-dispensing toys) in our store.
  • Mat (or use something similar that you have, like a rubberized agility table, Klimb table, dog bed, platform, barrel,  or a smooth square or rectangular piece of wood)

  • Target plate (or use something similar that you have like a coaster or the top of a yogurt container)

  • Leash

  • A 10-foot by 10-foot space (or larger) in which to work

  • Optional (but highly recommended): 2 tug toys, Flirt pole (or put your tug toy on a rope), Clicker (or verbal marker such as "yes"), Bait bag (or training kilt or vest) to store treats (cut into bite-sized pieces), or use your pocket, binder for your training log

"It was a very well planned and executed class. Demos were excellent. I had hoped to pick up some tips for the new dog I am training, but it was classic in methods (I am on my sixth agility dog). However, for someone new to the sport, it is excellent and I would highly recommend it. In fact, many agility teachers don't have enough time to teach an individual student that kind of detail, so taking this class would be very useful for one's students with new or young dogs. or students in the beginning and intermediate phases of agility."  —Nancy

"Thank you so much for this class. It has been an eye opener in a lot of ways. It’s interesting to train a dog with one eye and train a dog as laid back as Joggins. It’s hard not to compare him to Arbutus as they are so opposite in many ways. Arbutus being so driven when it comes to games like touch, five ball and walking with food with her against the wall. Joggins is still apprehensive walking against the wall but we’re working on it. This course has given me something to work on with Joggins and I’m sure they’ll both become better dogs because of you. I to have become more aware of things that help focus the dogs on me. I found your videos to be very beneficial as I’m extremely visual. My biggest problem is patience when working with Joggins because he’s so laid back. I would definitely be interested in enrolling for your next course and would and will recommend your classes to friends both online and at Kayenna Training Academy."   —Wendy

"I really enjoyed the course. I absolutely loved the engagement game and use it with my puppy all the time when we go to a new, exciting environment. I also really enjoyed the 5 Balls Game and just played it again last night with my puppy. Some great exercises to use with my students' dogs as well."  —Joyce

"I thoroughly enjoyed the class. I like the reading material and then being shown examples via video. It was easy to follow along. It was clear. And, I am already seeing results."  —Sylvia

"The course wasn't what I was expecting. I was looking for more on specific skills to help an easily over-aroused adult dog a) not get to threshold, and b) get some focus back if gets there. That said, I did learn a lot which will help both my 5-year-old Border Collie, my 3-monthpold Cattle Dog puppy, and my puppy agility students."  —Louise
